Day three of recording the new song: largely spent outside banging on the front gate with a stick. Thought I'd get a great metallic ultra-cowbell sound out of it; didn't reckon with my sloppy tempo-keeping, and ended up having to slide the individual thwacks around on the timeline in Final Cut Pro to reconstruct the track. Got it in perfect sync with the drums... then found out it sounded out of sync with the acoustic guitar, which was also loose in the opposite direction. Lots of little one-frame sliding of thunks to split the difference, till my eyeballs popped. Then fed it into GarageBand, tried the Crunchy Drums effect, and it instantly went from barely audible to overpowering the whole mix.

Also patched up a screwed-up bit of the acoustic guitar tracks, and recorded a guide vocal. Which was interesting cause I don't have half the words yet...

ETA: 3:30 AM. Re-recorded most of the lead guitar licks, one phrase at a time. I've now played creases into my fingers. Time to stop and let the flesh grow back...

So at this point, I have four songs in more-or-less-listenable form: "That Wasn't Me", "Something's Gotta Give", U2'S "Summer Rain", and the Monkees' "Circle Sky". I think I'll need a weekend off before I attack the next one -- either "Evening Star" (if Kate wants to finish her lyrics) or the Cowboy Junkies' "Crescent Moon". And I have to say, I'm having far more fun with this than I've had with writing for ages -- the little link in my head which says "this is work, and if it's not gonna go anywhere it's useless" just isn't tripped by this!
